En promedio, la absorción de luz roja en el hielo es seis veces más eficiente que la absorción de luz azul, por tanto cuanto más distancia viaje un haz de luz blanca, en su camino va perdiendo más y más fotones rojos, amarillos, verdes... y son los azules los que "sobreviven". Esta es la razón del color azul del hielo puro, y de un glaciar o de un iceberg. Necesitarías un bloque de hielo lo bastante grande para poder apreciar el efecto. Se puede intentar congelar agua desionizada y desgasificada, pero aunque se obtenga hielo muy transparente, observar ese color azulado en un cubito es imposible.
